To monitor and reduce environmental health inequalities in Belgium.

A growing number of studies show that environmental pollution can increase the risk of diseases and premature mortality, while conversely, a natural environment can improve health. This risk is all the greater if combined with social inequalities and poverty. As a result, governments around the world are working to mitigate the negative health effects of environmental exposures and ensure a more beneficial environment.

The overall aim of the ELLIS project is to develop relevant tools for policy-making to monitor and reduce environmental health inequalities in Belgium, including 3 dimensions:
  • socio-economic deprivation;
  • environmental exposures;
  • and consequences for health.
In addition to monitoring the situation, ELLIS will simulate the potential impact of alternative policy scenarios on inequalities and the scale of the burden of environment-related diseases.
