Course content
First part: Anatomy of seed plants. Originality of plant development. Anatomy of root, stem and leaf. Second part: Diversity and evolution of plants (in a very broad sense): a phylogenetic perspective. Fungi. Cyanobacteria. Reticulate evolution of Algae (Brown Algae, Green Algae, Red Algae). Origin of terrestrial plants. Evolution of Embryophytes. Origin of vascular tissues, ovule, carpel and flower.
Contents varies depending on student groups (Biology, Bioengeneering, Geology, Geography)
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
To show that diversity of plants is the outcome of biological evolution. To train students to observing and describing living plants. To give students the conceptual tools to interpret the functional and evolutionary significance of plant diversity. To illustrate plant importance to man.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Lectures illustrated with powerpoint projections. Online iconography ; practicals and demonstrations based on living materails (Jardin Jean Massart) ; herbarium.

Practicals are evaluated throughout the year. Practical test in January. Final year examination (theory and practicals) in June.
