Course content
Differences between thermodynamics and kinetics. Glossary: reaction rate, stoichiometry, yield, conversion. Material balance for different types of reactors. Kinetic order and molecularity. Rate laws: spillable reactions, influence of concentration. Reversible reactions, parallel and consecutive approximation of the steady state. Expérimental methods, relaxation and quick reactions. Temperature dependence, Arrhenius equation, transition state theory of collisions. Mechanisms of homogeneous reactions. Important examples: chain reactions, polymerization, homogeneous catalysis (acid-base enzyme, metallo-organic). Adsorption. Langmuir isotherm.
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
Develop basic knowledge of the parameters determining the speed of chemical reactions. Students are expected to know the experimental and theoretical methods of chemical kinetics.
