Course content
Introduction: definition and object of penology.
First part: the prison (history in Belgium; origins of legislations; internal legal status of the prisoners; external legal status of the convicts…).
Second part: community sanctions (probation, mediation, “Justice houses”).
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
Student will know the basis of the organization of the punishments and understand the logics in the penalty, their connections with the social structure as well as the modalities of application and the reforms.

Ex cathedra course including interactions with students.
Differents parts of the course are completed during supervised exercices.

Penology analyzes the ultimate part of the penal administration which concerns punishments
