Course content

The Earth, a singular planet in the solar system. Main physical and chemical propreties of the global Earth. Mechanisms of partial Mantle melting and magmatic differenciation. Studies of magmatic (and metamorphic) processes related to geotectonic environments (Mid-Ocean Ridges, Large Igneous Provinces, Intraplate Magmatism, Subduction zones). Metamorphic facies and degrees associated with metabasic, metapelitic and ultramafic series; Reconstruction of P-T-time paths of metamorphic series (chemographic diagrams, ...).

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

Main Objectives: Knowledge of petrographic and geochemical characteristics of the rocks to reconstruct their petrogenesis. Knowledge of magmatic and metamorphic petrogenetic processes related to the main geotectonic environments (Mid-Ocean Ridges, Large Igneous Provinces, Intraplate Magmatism, Subduction zones) and the main reservoirs (Mantle and Crust).

Learning outcomes: demonstrate curiosity and abilities to think critically, to synthesize, to perform a careful exam of samples and present results with precision and accuracy.
