Analyse de textes littéraires anglais I

In the first term (Dr. F. Bellarsi's section), the course focuses on contemporary British short stories.

In the second term (Prof. Maufort's section), this course provides an introduction to modern anglophone drama. It is based on a detailed analysis of three significant modern plays (by Oscar Wilde, Tennessee Williams and Brian Friel).

IMPORTANT: The course is supplemented by tutorials given by Mr. Watson, the assistant, as well as by weekly online tests over the Virtual University during the first term, in order to help students prepare for the interview in December. 

"Passerelle" students in Theatre Arts are required to attend Prof . Maufort's part of the course only. The course will be adapted to their specific needs and will concentrate on two plays. It will also comprise a translation assignment. Students are requested to meet with Prof. Maufort on the first day of classes to discuss the organisation of lectures.

This course introduces students to methods enabling them to analyse modern and contemporary fiction and drama in English.

Courses requiring this course

Formal lectures + tutorials relating to the fundamentals of narratology + in the first term, compulsory weekly online tests over the Virtual university. Additional individual reading is also required.

References, bibliography, and recommended reading

Bibliographical background will vary according to the nature of the works analysed in any given year. A bibliography will be handed out and posted online on the Virtual University at the beginning of each semester.

Dr. Bellarsi's section: Interview in December (= partial oral requiring students to analyse one of the texts covered in class & one unseen short story to be prepared in individual home reading) + Prof. Maufort's section: comprehensive oral examination organized at the end of the second term + in the first term, compulsory weekly online tests over the Virtual University. "Passerelle" students in Theatre Arts are the only ones who do not have to complete the weekly online tests..

Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)

The overall mark will combine the grade obtained for the 2 partial oral examinations (Dr. F. Bellarsi's exam = 1/3 of the final mark + Prof. M. Maufort's exam = 2/3 of the final mark).

Please note:

1) Prof. Maufort's June mark is subdivided as follows: 2/3 for the materials covered in class + 1/3 for the command of spoken English.

2) Dr. Bellarsi's December grade is subdivided as follows: 20 points for the materials seen in class; 20 points for the text prepared individually at home; 20 points for spoken English proficiency; 10 points for the first-semester weekly online tests.

3) If students do not take all the component parts of the evaluation, they will automatically be given a so-called "note de présence" (however, they will only have to resit the parts of the examination not taken previously or for which they did not obtain the requisite minimum pass of 10/20).

4) If at the end of the June session, a student does not obtain the minimum overall pass grade of 10/20, he/she will have to retake in August any sub-component of the evaluation for which he/she obtained a partial grade BELOW 10.

PLEASE NOTE THAT PARTIAL GRADES ATTRIBUTED TO SUB-COMPONENTS OF THE OVERALL EVALUATION PROCESS WILL NOT BE TRANSFERRED FROM ONE ACADEMIC YEAR TO THE NEXT (THEY CAN ONLY BE TRANSFERRED FROM ONE EXAMINATION SESSION TO THE NEXT WITHIN ONE AND THE SAME ACADEMIC YEAR).

"Passerelle" students in Theatre Arts will be assessed on the basis of an oral examination in June. The final mark will be calculated as follows: 2/3 for the student's knowledge of the course material ( 2 plays); 1/3 for the translation assignment.
