Course content
The course is organized in three parts, each of which includes an historical introduction (4. h.) and a in-depth lectures on questions linked to the history of art (8 h.) : 1) From Late Antiquity to the end of the Iconoclastic controversy; 2) the centre and the provinces of the Byzantine Empire from the ninth century to 1204; 3) the Byzantine cultural influence on the neighbouring states (the Orthodox Slav world, Sicily and South Italy, Venice).
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
Study the various aspects of Byzantine art in correlation with the history of Byzantium, the Orthodox World and the Mediterranean West. To show the contribution of archaeology to an understanding of the environment and the social production.
