Course content

This course provides a general overview of the history of the Mediterranean regions from the 2nd millennium BCE to the 6th century CE. The course analyses the emergence and development of the Greek cities, their expansion throughout the Mediterranean (and the Black Sea), the development of the Hellenistic monarchies and the relationship between the cities and wider forms of government, the emergence and expansion of the Roman state and the gradual transformation of its structures up to the 6th century CE.
The course seeks to identify the general dynamics underlying the history of antiquity, the main categories of sources that shed light on the various issues, and the problems that recent research has sought to highlight.
