Course content

The syllabus covers grammar points (conjugation of irregular verbs and lexical work on verbs and their context of use / pronouns COD, COI, EN, Y / past tenses, present indicative, present and past subjunctive / relative pronouns / direct and indirect transitive verbal constructions, etc.). Work is based on a series of authentic articles selected from the French-language press. The learners give oral presentations, lead a debate, argue, and react to the different points of view expressed. They write a summary of the concepts presented.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

In speaking and writing, the learner will be able to understand a long, relatively complex argumentative discourse (e.g., news, information, concrete and abstract subjects). The learner will be able to understand a specialized article in his/her field of study or research and grasp the progression of a thought.

In speaking and writing, the learner will be able to communicate a clear, detailed, and well-articulated message on concrete, abstract and cultural subjects with spontaneity and ease.

Prerequisites and Corequisites

Required and Corequired knowledge and skills

If the learner has taken courses in French as a foreign language at ULB (60 hours), he/she must have passed the end-of-course test for level Moyen II. Otherwise, they must have acquired knowledge of level B1 (as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and possibly have incomplete knowledge of level B2.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course will sometimes be given in lecture form or will take the form of a flipped classroom. In the latter case, learners will be expected to familiarize themselves with a theoretical point before the lesson. The course will be devoted to solving exercises on this point or to providing additional explanations based on the questions asked. Students will be required to give oral presentations.
