Programme objectives
The main purpose of the Master is to develop the skills required to properly define an issue and determine how to respond to it in a relevant and original way. Participants gain these skills by following advanced courses in French language and literature, using a variety of methodologies that include both diachronic and synchronic approaches. The programme also provides a solid foundation in one or several Romance languages.
The students put their new skills and knowledge to use when writing their dissertation, a major project that requires them to demonstrate their ability to find an original approach of a subject and address it with scientific impartiality.

Programme's added value
The programme is based on a common core with additional elective and specialised courses, which enables students to shape their curriculum to suit their personality and interests. This flexibility lends itself well to student mobility, which the Faculty highly encourages. Exchanges programmes exist with no fewer than 39 universities (in 13 European countries as well as in Canada and Japan), lasting from 3 months to a full academic year. In addition, access to other ULB departments means that multidisciplinary courses with a direct connection to advanced research can be offered. ULB is the only university in the French-speaking region of Belgium where Portuguese is taught as part of the Bachelor and Master programmes.

Access conditions
Programme
The programme includes specific courses (linguistics, Latin, philology, French literature, Romance cultures and literatures) and a number of elective courses (60 credits in total); a dissertation (30 credits over two years); and courses specific to each focus (30 credits).
Students can choose one of four focuses for the Master, all of which are centred on personal projects:

The teaching focus prepares students to work as teachers, developing skills that promote teaching such as argumentation and knowledge sharing.

The focus on French as a foreign language studies French in relation to a non French speaking audience.

The focus on publishing covers editorial policies, library management, and the history of the publishing industry.

The focus on a third Romance language gives students knowledge of an additional Romance language.
What's next ?
Prospects
In addition to gaining the general skills that all advanced academic programmes provide, our students become proficient in at least two Romance languages and cultures (French and Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, or Romanian); they also develop skills that are sought after in both the public and private sectors (especially in any work involving speaking or writing), such as an analytical mind, critical thinking skills, excellent writing skills, well-spokenness, and creativity.
Depending on their choice of focus, they can pursue a career in teaching, research, publishing, or in the library sector.
