Programme objectives
Our societies are centred on information and knowledge, with an impressive amount of information made available through a range of information systems and communications technologies (internet, intranet, and databases). In this context, information specialists fulfil an increasingly important role both in the public and private sector.
This university-level multidisciplinary programme trains specialists who can meet the strategic challenges involved in the management of information and communication.
Back in 1977, ULB—through what was then the Infodoc department—pioneered an academic degree in information management. Thirty years later, this Master programme continues to build on the experience gained. Its goal is twofold: first, it teaches about information structuring in the broadest sense, which requires high-level abstraction and conceptualisation skills. Second, it provides the technological knowledge needed for the operational implementation of information systems.
With its strict interdisciplinary approach, this conceptual and technological Master fits in well with students’ existing academic curricula. By complementing their primary discipline with actual applications, it will improve their skills in information management and communication.

With its strict interdisciplinary approach, this conceptual and technological course slots in well with students’ existing university curricula. As an application field complementing their primary discipline, the course will in all probability enhance their skills in information management and communication.
Teaching team and methods
Programme's added value
This multidisciplinary programme combines humanities and sciences, theory and practice. Moreover, the practical work that it includes involves projects that bring together several disciplines and that reflect the logical sequence of steps to be taken when designing and implementing information and communications systems.
The opportunity to do part of the programme in a foreign university (as part of a European or international exchange programme) gives this Master an international dimension.
The courses offered also tie in with current issues in scientific research. The academic staff is involved in various research projects related to information and communication technologies and their application in the information society, and students will therefore be in contact with these not only at certain stages of their practical work, but also—and especially—when writing their dissertation.

The teaching team is involved in various research projects dealing with information and communication technology and their application in the information society. Students will be confronted with these not only in certain stages of their practical work, but especially when writing their dissertation.
Access conditions
Programme
The programme includes theoretical and practical classes (60 credits) focused on structuring information and gaining technological knowledge on information systems; in addition, students have the opportunity to complete an internship during the second year of the programme, which will let them apply their skills on the ground in a variety of environments. Lastly, a dissertation (25 credits) lets students delve deeper into a topic of their choosing.
The Master is mainly focused on the creation—both conceptual and technical—of information systems. This goal involves, among other things, taking into account the system's organisational environment and the assessment and improvement of the quality of information used. This process may be used, for instance, for document and records management.

Prospects
ICST graduates are in high demand in all fields that involve setting up information and communication systems. Working in various environments (companies, administrations, libraries, etc.), they might design and deploy information systems (archives, document management systems, databases, multimedia communication, corporate portal, etc.) or work with existing tools for organisational or strategic purposes (information quality assessment, auditing of information flows, knowledge management, economic intelligence, etc.).
