Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the history of the Arab World in the 19th and 20th centuries.This course will allow students to better understand the complexity of this changing and conflict-ridden area.

Contribution to the teaching profile

The course will be taught in 12 sessions of 2 hours. It is addressed to students registered in BA d'Histoire and BA/ Master en langues et lettres modernes, orientation Orientales, à finalité Monde arabo-musulman. The course discusses the disintegration of the Ottoman empire, the impact of the Nahda, Muslim reformism, the birth of Arab nationalism, European political involvement in the Arab world (protectorates and colonies), the decolonization process, the era of independence, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and political regimes in the Arab world today. This year we will welcome Professor Abaher el Sakka from Birzeit University (Chair of International Cooperation) for two sessions on the history of Palestine.

1. 3 pages of essay (to be submitted at the last meeting): a biography of a person who has marked the history of the Arab world, a technical sheet or a reading sheet for a book: in a maximum of three pages.2- A written exam will take place at the end of the year.3-A participation note: personal investment, without which there can be no meaningful education, is highly recommended.
