Part 1: Theoretical problems. Europe between Democracy, Nation and Empire.
1. Democracy, sovereignty, identity: the problem of the political form of Europe.
2. Resurgence of nationalism? The paradoxical persistence of the national question.
3. The nation-state as a condition for democracy? The national-sovereignist argument.
Part 2: The question of the nation.
Theoretical elements: the nation as a political form.
Elements of history: paths of the nation in Europe from the French Revolution to the 20th century.
Conclusion: Europe beyond the nation state? The question of a post-national political form.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
This course aims to familiarise students with major theoretical approaches to the concept of nation. Specifically, students will be encouraged to acquire knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts which inform theoretical discussion of nationhood and to acquire knowledge and undestanding of the work of selected major thinkers who have adressed major theoretical issues concerning the nation.
Teaching methods and learning activities
Lecture followed by a discussion on the texts distributed to the students.
