Course content
The general course starts from a perspective of the project of a theory of democracy and its difficulties, in connection with contemporary diagnoses of "crisis of democracy". It then presents the ideals of radical democracy (from Rousseau to Castoriadis), criticisms of democracy (from Bonald to Pareto and Schmitt), the question of the relationship between liberalism and democracy (from Constant to Hayek via Kelsen and Schumpeter), the idea of a "republican" beyond of liberal democracy (Arendt, Pettit).
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
To study the main currents in the theories of democracy, through a general presentation (J.Y. Pranchère) and the study of fundamental texts for contemporary debates (Justine Lacroix).
Teaching methods and learning activities
Lectures and study of texts.
