Questions approfondies de la professionnalisation du travail social

The course consists of four sections:

The first section defines the concepts of professions and of professionalization, examines the theories on the professions and theoretical and social challenges of the professionalization.

The second section studies the historical evolution of the training and the profession of social work since the beginning of the 20th century: from the “canonical” jobs of social work (social worker, youth worker) to the new jobs. It presents the current structure of the employment of the social action branch and establishes a mapping of the different field of social intervention (structure of employment and professions). It addresses then the collective bargaining and the role of the professional groups in the organization of the social action sector.

The third section analyses the impact of social policies and institutional dynamics on the professional reorganizations of the social work branch and the new configurations of the jobs.

The fourth section examines the impact of the changes occurred in the social work sector on social and professional identities of social workers. The course will try to understand the effects of the public policies and the social intervention changes; the injunctions of empowerment and the individual responsibility of users on social workers identities.

The course is related to the sociology of professions in the social work sector. More precisely, it examines the professionalization process of jobs in the social action sector from the historical, political and identity point of view (professional identity).

The course addresses the history of the initial and the vocational training of social work, the evolution of professions in the social action branch, the role of the State in the new configurations of social action jobs and the impact of the sector changes on professional identities of social workers.
