Course content

Definition of the characteristics of the chemical and metallurgical industries: analysis of energy consumption and of energy sources in these industries; specific risks associated with them

Description of a few industrial processes illustrating different thermodynamic and kinetic concepts:

  • Metal production

  • production of acids and bases (sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid)

  • Electrification and decarbonization of key chemicals (ammonia, benzene, ethylene etc.)

  • prevention of corrosion

Introduction to life cycle analysis.

    Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

    Show to the students that chemistry plays a major role in manufacturing sector and is vital in development of and transition towards a decarbonized economy.

    Illustrate the general principles of chemistry of major industrial processe
