Programme objectives
The Master in Ethics enables students to:
-
acquire fundamental knowledge in ethics;
-
learn to apply this knowledge to case analyses and topical issues;
-
learn transdisciplinarity, by attending classes in different ULB faculties and institutes: Philosophy and Letters, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Social and Political Sciences, Solvay Brussels School Economics & Management, Psychology and Education, Environmental and Land Planning Management, etc.;
-
benefit from advanced and up-to-date training, with guest speakers in applied ethics from Belgium and abroad.
This Master sets itself apart from others with the diversity and complementarity of its three specialised modules, each of which tackles a major current topic.
Teaching team and methods
Programme's added value
This Master offers a rich and stimulating learning environment: classes are given by specialists from ULB's various faculties and institutes, as well as by Belgian and international guest professors invited as part of the Chair in Ethics. The teaching staff is available to advise students on their seminar work and dissertation.
The Philosophy of Science and Technique optional module is exceptional in offering many opportunities to take advantage of classes given in other Faculties. This openness towards other disciplines helps to encourage philosophical reflection based on sound knowledge and a range of practices. This option is organised in partnership with the University of Liege and the Catholic University of Louvain.

Programme
The programme promotes student participation and personal reflection. It includes a common core of courses on ethics, knowledge theory, and current issues. Students also pick one of three specialised modules, each with its own series of classes and seminars:
-
Bioethics: ethical aspects of knowledge and practices related to medicine, healthcare, life sciences, biotechnologies, etc.
-
Development, environment et economy: ethical issues related to decision-making, sustainable development, corporations, globalisation, etc.
-
Law and media: ethical issues related to European and international institutions, human rights, information, etc.
In addition, the Master in Ethics includes 45 credits of advanced courses on bioethics, current issues in applied ethics, the ethics of information and communication, the ethics of development, corporate ethics, etc.
At the end of the programme, students complete a Master's dissertation.
What's next ?
Prospects
This Master provides general-purpose knowledge and skills, along with a specialisation in one of three advanced modules, which students can adapt and put to use in a very wide range of professional activities. Graduates can identify the ethical dimension of any given issue, analyse it, and take it into account when making a final decision; this skill is highly valued in a great variety of areas (medicine, economics, information, environment, etc.).
Nowadays, all professions must account for ethics in their day-to-day activities, and many call upon an ethicist. Graduates of the Master in Ethics can work in ‘ethics committees’ in a number of sectors: media, industry, finance, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, etc.
