Course content

In-depth study of documents (inscriptions, papyri, ostraca, etc.), written in Greek and/or in Latin and coming from Egypt. The texts will be read, edited, translated and commented according to the standart methods (taught in the course of papyrology and epigraphy). Documents will be compared with egyptian texts written in a non classical language (in demotic, Coptic or arabic) or with classical texts form other regions of the mediteranean world. One or two sets of documents, different each year, will be studied.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

To present the cultural, political, social and economical life of the Egyptian society during the hellenistic, Roman, byzantine and Arabic periods, focussing on the literary sources, the papyri and the inscriptions.

Lectures and exercises on unpublished papyri and documents

Contribution to the teaching profile

To master specialized knowledges in languages, literatures and cultures, and in particular to master the techniques, methods and issues of papyrology and more generally of the study of Greco-Roman and Byzantine Egypt. To implement its achievements in a critical way and to innovate in order to carry out scientific research in an autonomous way. To develop a clear and constructed discourse using the language of the discipline.
