Course content

Application of the philological method to critical analysis of problems related to editing, translating, understanding, explaining and commenting texts in Greek and Latin languages.

For the Greek part:

Practice of Latin language (versions/critical reviews of translations, grammatical justifications and cursory reading). At least every two year the focus is on issues related to stylistics

Thorough command of Greek and Latin languages and philological method as applied to Greek and Latin texts, detailed knowledge of and critical reflection on Greek and Latin languages, ability to use the tools and resources required for the study of Greek and Latin texts

Ex-cathedra speeches, individual exercises, cursory reading, personal work and workshops, depending on topics and times. In view of the number of students involved, active participation is strongly encouraged, as well as spontaneous questions and contributions

Mainly classroom and occasionally remote teaching, with (extended or full) remote teaching as a fall-back solution should the circumstances require it

12h th. in total, incl. remote practice of "version" in the broader sense (open book translation review and extensive grammatical justifications)

Evaluation built progressively, with recognition of the work performed during the year: cursory reading (Q1 or Q2) and, if the conditions are met (see details below and in the document entitled "Programmation" on the UV/Teams), "versions" of Q1

For the course itself:

Success in this course is subject to successful completion of each of its two parts (Greek and Latin), each part counting for 50% of the whole. The overall mark is set by dividing by two the sum of the two individual scores. In the event of failure on one part only, the practice of the absorbing mark is applied and the mark falling below 10/20 is taken into account for the whole course.
