Course content
This course visits the various criminological theories from the birth of this discipline until our days. It tends to deliver a sociological analysis of these various theories: it places them in their social context of emergence and analyzes their contributions to the discipline. It emphasizes the fact that the coherence of criminology- a discipline built itself from scattered knowledges - needs to be questioned. Indeed, the history of criminology is crossed by conflicts between various disciplines, mutual misunderstandings, but also accumulation of knowledge on crime and crime prevention.
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
To deliver to the students a sociological study of the various criminological theories so that they can be situated in the (sometimes stormy) contemporary debates crossing this discipline.
