Course content
To distinguish between morals and ethics. To outline the historical context of the appearance of applied ethics and to define its different core issues: bioethics, environmental ethics, professional and business ethics. To outline the classic paradigms : Deontological ethics (kantism), virtue ethics (Hume), consequentialism ethics (utilitarianism) and the contemporary theories : « principlism » (Beauchamp et Childress), procedural ethics (Engelhardt), ethics of care and narrative ethics (Gilligan, Montgomery), modern casuistry (Toulmin et Jonsen) ; anthropocentric and non-anthropocentric environmental ethics (Naess) – status of animals (Singer, Regan) ; the ethics of responsibility (Jonas), discourse ethics (Habermas), liberalism (Rawls), libertarianism (Nozick), communitarianism (Mac Intyre, Sandel), the ethics of goodness (Taylor).
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
To give a critical presentation of the guiding philosophical and moral theories of the principle fields of applied ethics. To discuss the way in which these theories lead to an approach to areas where questions of ethics are raised.
