Course content

Visit to a volcanically active region in Europe. The destination and exact program may vary in function of volcanic alert levels, as well as any potential international travel restrictions.

  • Volcanic landforms and deposits in the field
  • Volcanoes and Society
  • Exercise on stratigraphic logging

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

  • Recognize and describe different types of volcanic landforms and deposits in the field
  • Explain concepts of hazard and risk, and the relationship of volcanoes and society
  • Produce a litholog of a stratigraphic sequence and interpret it in the context of the local volcanism

Prerequisites and Corequisites

Required and Corequired knowledge and skills

Volcanology course, GEOL-F4002

Teaching methods and learning activities

Field excursion of 7-10 days (depending on exact destination)
Evenings: presentations in groups of 2-4 (summary of the day, scientific papers)
This course is given in English and French. Students are strongly encouraged (but not obliged) to prepare their presentations and reports in English.

Contribution to the teaching profile

This field trip provides the student with an overview of volcanology in the field (landforms, deposits, eruptive styles) but also the complicated relationship of volcanoes and society, including aspects of hazards and risk, but also benefits of volcanoes (e.g. tourism).

Other information

Additional information

A financial contribution is requested, mainly to cover costs of international travel. Students who face financial difficulties are encouraged to contact the coordinator as soon as possible, and confidentially, to seek a solution.
In case it is not practically feasible to organise the field trip due to "force majeure", or if a student is prevented from participating for health or practical reasons, the course will be replaced by a series of practical and written assignments on topics related to volcanology.

Other

The course is evaluated based on participation during the field trip (including the quality of field notes), evening presentations, and the independent volcanic stratigraphy exercise.

Alternative course: evaluated based on written work on four different assignments.

Even if the course is taught in English and French, presentations and exercises may be made in either language. The choice of language will have no impact on the final mark.

The course can only be evaluated once per academic year.

Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)

Participation during field trip and quality of field notes: 40%

Evening presentations: 30%

Independent stratigraphic logging exercise : 30%

Alternative course : 25% on each of the assignments
