Course content
General introduction to the main periods, cultures and themes of Prehistory and Protohistory. Through the presentation of major sites and discoveries, the focus is put on the relationship between material cultures and social and economic transformations. After six modules devoted to Paleolithic and Mesolithic societies within a broader geographical framework, the course concentrates on the trajectories of Northwest European societies, from sedentarization to the emergence of the first urban centers.
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
- To acquire a chronological and cultural frame of reference for the pre- and protohistoric periods.
- To identify the main archaeological issues by period.
Teaching methods and learning activities
The course is given ex-cathedra and is organized into 13 modules
following a chronological order: (1) Introduction to the discipline, (2) Early Hominins and Lower Paleolithic, (3 &4 ) Middle Paleolithic in Eurasia & Middle Stone Age in Africa, (5 & 6) Upper Paleolithic in Europe, (7) Mesolithic, (8 & 9) Neolithic in the Near East and Europe, (10) European Chalcolithic, (11) Bronze Age, (12) Early Iron Age
Iron Age, (13) Second Iron Age.
