Course content

After an introduction to the major reference works and sources of documentation on prehistory and protohistory in northwestern Europe, students are tasked with producing a synthesis report on a prehistoric or protohistoric site in continental Europe or its margins, and presenting it to their peers (Part 1).
At the same time (Part 2), students are familiarized with the reading of lithic material. They are taught to distinguish between artifacts and ecofacts, to identify the main categories of lithic production, and are introduced to the concepts of methods and techniques, as well as to the creation of diacritical schemes.

  • to collect and synthesize data from periodicals and reference works.
  • to write & present a scientific report
  • to read a lithic artifact

The assignment is due before spring break. The use of generative artificial intelligence tools is strictly forbidden.
Oral presentations follow spring break.
The oral exam consists of three parts:

  • The creation of a diacritical diagram
  • Questions relating to the sites presented by the students
  • Feedback on the written work

Mark calculation method (including weighting of intermediary marks)

The grade is constructed as follows:

  • Written work and presentation: 60%.
  • Oral examination: 40% (20 % diacritical scheme + 20% questions on peers' oral presentations)
Each part must be successfully completed.
