Course content

This course gives a general overview of the history of the Mediterranean regions of the 8th century BC. our era in the 6th century AD. The course examines the genesis and development of the Greek cities, their expansion throughout the Mediterranean area (and the Black Sea), the development of the Hellenistic monarchies and the relationship between cities and wider forms of government, the birth and expansion of the Roman state and the gradual conversion of its structures until the 6th century. of our era.

The course tries to highlight the general dynamics underlying the history of Antiquity, the main categories of sources that shed light on the various issues, and the issues that recent research attempts to highlight.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The course aims to offer a general but also dynamic view of the history of Greco-Roman antiquity.

At the end of the course, the student must be able to quickly situate a particular episode of this history in the general development that has been sketched (including its spatial and chronological dimension). It must be able to articulate the different phases, the different innovations of this history. It must also be able to approach historical presentations critically.
