Course content

12h taught by Antoine Attout (assistant) in the first quadrimester: introduction to bibliographic tools specific to ancient history, sources and documents. Exercise sessions.

Aude Busine's 24-hour course includes a presentation of several theoretical points (concepts of history during Antiquity, diversity of documentary sources, principles of dating, Quellenforschung, etc.). It will be followed by the practical analysis of specific records from the original documents in fields covering the Greek and Roman worlds, from the Archaic period to the late Antiquity. Particular attention will also be paid to the comparison of written documents and monuments, to the contribution of historical studies stricto sensu to the interpretation of archaeological and artistic vestiges. The cases studied concern mainly Greek history, from the archaic period to late antiquity.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The issue of the course is to get students familiar with the main practices of historical criticism applied to Classical Antiquity (Greek and Roman world). It mainly concerns the nature of the different documents taken into account, the internal techniques of text criticism (regarding litterary and epigraphical texts) along with few aspects of ancient historiography.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Both lectures and exercices are part of the course.

According to the student background, an essay and exercices will be required, and a final exam allows the evaluation of the acquired knoweldge.
