Course content

The analog portion of this course is about modelling the properties of elementary components (as resistors, capacitors, selfs, semiconductor diodes, transistors and operational amplifiers) involved in analog electronic circuits. It covers theory, as well as practical applications.

The digital portion deals with combinational logic (AND, OR, NOT, &c. gates); sequential logic (latches, flip-flops, registers); finite state machines; digital communications; programmable logic devices and VHDL.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The art of physical measurement in modern experiments in physics ultimately involves a great deal of engineering effort to construct the analog and digital capture circuits which perform the measurement. Some knowledge of basic principles of these systems is crucial to the career of researchers in the experimental physics domains. This course extends the basic knowledge of circuit theory taught in previous courses to include design of actual useful circuits. It is divided into two halves. The first half taught by G. Delentdecker deals with the fundamentals of transistors and amplifier circuits. The second half, taught by K. Hanson explores the rapidly changing field of digital circuit design.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The 60h course (material online) is given in a class equiped with a beamer and with laboratory equipment, like protoboards, oscilloscopes, function generators and DC power suppies. The teaching is interactive and mixes theory, circuit simulations and experimental sessions. An extra 12h integrating laboratory session is organized and the end of the quadrimester.
