Course content
- Brief summary of the functional and structural pathways involved in pain: nociception and nociceptive fibres activation, pain afferent pathways (discriminative, affective and motivational components), referred pain, central pain regulatory pathways.
- Description of analgesic drugs targets and mechanisms of action according to the different steps of nociceptive stimuli transduction and modulation: inflammatory reaction (steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), muscles (myorelaxant drugs), peripheral nerve (activation, facilitation and propagation), spinal nociceptive neurons (gate control theory), peri-acqueducal grey matter, opoidergic system and high level cortical control (Attentional, limbic and hypothalamic).
- Pragmatic method of analgesic drug selection based on real-life clinical patterns. Red flags in analgesia, sequential drug selection, drugs combinations (positive/negative interactions). Analgesic drugs limitations, number needed to treat (NNT) to get a benefice and combined pharmacological and non- pharmacological treatments.
