Course content

Modern and contemporary Czech literature

The course for the academic year 2023-2024 focuses on the study of Czech authors of the 20th and 21st centuries. The course will be built around the following authors: Ludvík Vaculík, Eva Kantůrková, Petr Hruška, Zdena Salivarová and Egon Hostovský.

Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)

The aim of the course is to present the major trends in poetry and prose in modern and contemporary Czech literature. We will pay particular attention to the gender balance of the authors presented (Czech women authors are systematically under-represented both in translations and in the curricula of Czech studies departments). Through the study of these different authors, the aim is to deepen students' knowledge of Czech literature while enriching their understanding of the cultural and historical issues from which it emerges. The aim is also to develop students' critical faculties and provide them with the tools they need to reflect on literary interpretation.

The seminar is made up of both ex-cathedra lectures and exercise sessions (work on texts).

Contribution to the teaching profile

To develop students' literary and critical skills by providing them with the appropriate tools and deepening their knowledge of Czech literature.

Oral presentation 10%: students will be required to give a preliminary oral presentation of their work on one of the authors studied.

Written work on one of the proposed authors: 60%.

The written work will be discussed at a final oral examination (30%) during which the teacher will ask additional questions about the content of the course and the work in order to determine the final mark.
