Course content
In this age of commemorations and the post-Shoah devoir de mémoire, the disciplines of history, anthropology and psychology have entered a fascinating and challenging phase of their relationship. Out of this dialogue between disciplines, a field of investigation about social memory and heritage has emerged. This course critically charts the history of social memory, cultural transmission and heritage in the Humanities and in anthropology, in particular, reflecting on what social memory is and what are the significant problems in studying it. We shall focus on history as it is lived by people themselves in various cultural environments, emphasizing how remembrances are shared and transmitted by social groups, and how places, bodies and objects contribute to materialize individual biography and shared history.
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
