Course content
The course adopts a critical approach to literary texts that seeks to understand them in the larger context of the history of literature, culture, society, ideology and the other arts. This general introductory course aims to elucidate the coherence and retrace the development of major literary currents and forms in Europe. Each year, it focuses on a literary form (novel, short story, drama…), a movement (baroque, realism, modernism…), a theme or a concept (mimesis, War, the reader…). Readings and discussions focus on a number of representative canonical works.
Objectives (and/or specific learning outcomes)
To be able to situate the canonical texts of Western literary history in their literary traditions and their socio-cultural contexts. To be acquainted with the specific characteristics of literary texts and the historical function of literature. To reflect critically on the coherence and the development of the major literary currents in Europe since the 17th Century.
