FNRS supports research projects and funds researchers

The Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (‘fund for scientific research’, F.R.S.-FNRS) is an essential component of fundamental research support in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
ULB has some 500 FNRS researchers, over a hundred of whom have a permanent mandate (research directors, senior research associates, research associates); the others (research fellows, grant holders, postdoctoral researchers) have a temporary mandate, e.g. for a PhD thesis.

FNRS also funds major equipment purchases, and covers expenses that are necessary for the researchers’ activities: in total, nearly 20% of research funds that come from external sources are provided by FNRS.
