Care: Support unit for the respect of students
You're a student at ULB or HELB Prigogine. You're in a relationship with another student, a teacher, a member of the staff at ULB or HELB Prigogine, or an internship coordinator and it's affecting your concentration and well-being. You can hardly think of anything else. Perhaps you feel humiliated, under pressure, and you don't know what to do or who to talk to.
The support unit for the respect of students (Care) welcomes and supports students dealing with emotional or sexual abuse during their studies. The service was created in 2020 by the students of the BEA (Bureau of Student Representatives) and is independent of the authorities.
Care was created specifically to offer you a totally independent, confidential space where someone will listen to you
- To help you see things more clearly,
- Put what's happening into words,
- To break the silence in which you may feel trapped, without fear of reprisals and without committing yourself to any disciplinary action.
Together, we'll look for ways of helping you to find a way out of this harmful dynamic while taking your goals into account, to reconnect with your resources, because you do have them, and to make an informed choice about what steps you're going to take. So we'll also tell you about the possible courses of action that exist, and we'll work together to choose the best one for your situation.
Next, if you like, we'll be able to help you put the chosen actions into practice and we'll assess how the situation is progressing together.
You will never be forced to involve Care and no steps will be taken without your consent.

Who are you dealing with when you contact Care?
I'm Sylvie Boët, the Manager of the centre. I'm a doctor of psychology and I studied and did my PhD in Liège. I then worked for 16 years in a service for the prevention and management of violence in schools. All my training has been focussed on listening, support and reconnecting, even in situations of hierarchical imbalance, as well as trauma support. I joined ULB to implement the Care project in August 2020.
What's important for me in harassment or high-conflict situations is to find a way of getting people to speak out. A climate of safety is essential to achieve this. I'm particularly sensitive and attentive to that..
I'm Alison Avermaete, a psychosocial counsellor.
I trained as a social worker and also have a master's degree in family and sexuality sciences.
My various professional experiences have given me a wide-ranging insight into how human beings function, as well as developing a particular affinity for helping people.
What's important for me in harassment or high-conflict situations is to support people who seek help in a climate of respect and trust. It's also important to help every individual identify what they need and support them on their chosen path.
I'm Charlotte Jannsens, a psychosocial counsellor.
I'm a trained psychologist and I completed a master's in social and intercultural psychology as well as a master's in clinical psychology and psychopathology at ULB. I've also been working for several years with teenagers and young adults in schools and universities.
What's important to me is welcoming students in a climate of trust and kindness so that they can share their experiences and feel supported and safe. My aim is also to help them understand the situations they're facing and, if they wish, to discuss possible courses of action. It is also essential for me to respect each individual's wishes and the pace they want to move at.
I'm Patricia Mélotte, a psychosocial counsellor.
I've been a doctor of psychology since 2017 and completed all my studies at ULB.
During my thesis, I studied women's reactions to sexist remarks. Then I took part in several projects and studies at ULB: a study on sexist harassment on public transport, a project to combat sexist and sexual harassment, diversity year, the diversity plan... Before joining Care in September 2021, I was a gender and diversity resource person.
For me, the most effective way of fighting sexual harassment and sexual violence is consent education. If they don't say yes, the answer's no! My aim is to support young people in putting this seemingly simple sentence into practice.
I'm Patricia Bakalak, Administrative assistant.
Feminist and activist committed to upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms, it is with kindness and discretion that I will welcome you to the Care unit, whether in person, over the phone, or via email, and I will handle the information with the utmost respect for confidentiality.
