Contenu du cours

The course integrates the principles and methods of engineering and life sciences and explores contemporary biomaterials science and focuses on state-of-the-art biomaterials research. We will start with the Introduction and application of biomaterials and introduce different classes of biomaterials such as Ceramics and glasses as biomaterials and Polymeric materials. The course then covers Fundamentals and characterization of hydrogels: Types of hydrogels (physical, chemical, sensitive to heat, pH, light, magnetic field), Determination of gel content, Determination of swelling degree. We will finally look at bioprinting and essential properties of biomaterials for Bioprinting and finally present a few case studies on the tissue engineering approach for soft tissue regeneration

Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)

Both life science and engineering fundamentals will be presented to students and at the end of this teaching unit, the student will be able to:

Identify selection criteria for the use of a specific biomaterial and processing technique for applications as implant materials and tissue engineering scaffolds;  Compare and contrast appropriate material choice and processing techniques and identify where compromises have to be made; Differentiate the various classes of biomaterials based on structure and function; Differentiate various analytical methods based on their use to characterize bulk and surface properties of biomaterials; Differentiate various biomedical devices based upon function, biomaterial composition, describe multiple practical aspects of biomedical device fabrication and testing; Develop critical analysis of biomaterials and their method of application; Understand the future need of medical device companies; Learn to communicate advances and insufficiency of biomaterials and write a critical report on the current state of biomaterials using the existing body of the literature on a specific topic

Students also will be provided with the opportunity to work as a team to complete a tissue engineering design experience by utilizing the engineering design process for the identification and development of a clinically relevant strategy to restore, repair, or regeneration a dysfunctional tissue or organ.

Méthodes d'enseignement et activités d'apprentissages

The course for this semester is delivered mainly online via the application TEAMS,

The course is composed of a combination of lecturing using PowerPoint slides and small group tutorials
there will be in-person group presentations and hands-on training sessions

A few guest lectures will be presented by renowned scientists on key developmental areas in biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

syllabus, grades, evaluation, lecture notes, homework assignments, and a message board will be available via the Microsoft Team.

Références, bibliographie et lectures recommandées

The PowerPoint slides are made available on the UV and Teams

Students are encouraged to take notes of complementary information given during the lessons.

Selective online video streams related to the course will be introduced during the course

Textbook information is subject to be changed at any time at the discretion of the faculty member. One primary reference book of Comprehensive Biomaterials II ISBN 978-0-08-100692-4 is available at the Science and technology library (Bibliothèque des sciences et techniques)
