Gender and Globalisation

Is there a unique, homogenous way to be "gay" worldwide ? What have the effects of #MeToo been in different countries ? What were the Europeans obsessed with sexuality? Are war and global finance a man's problem? How does economic globalization affect women specifically? Are LGBT+ rights a set of norms that the West imposes on the rest of the world? With Tinder and Youporn, have sex and love become global commodities?

This course purports to provide students with conceptual tools and empirical examples to answer the abovementioned questions. It investigates the co-production of gender and the globalization of human, social, political, activist and economic activities. It was conceived for people interested in these issues for personal or political reasons, and for those who would like to elaborate tools or policies to tackle gender inequalities in multicultural environments or international organisations. 
From a theoretical and methodological perspective, the course adopts a historical perspective drawing on the social sciences, i.e. sociology, international relations and political economy.

Students must read one or two compulsory readings before each lecture. These were produced by prominent historical personalities and gender activists can be accessed on the UV (PDFs) or in the syllabus (links).

The final grade for the course will draw on a final exam (no books/sources allowed) held in class (3 hours), which will consist of 3 questions. Students will answer each 3 questions in 3 small academic essays (one page max., double space). The final exam's date and hour will be determined by the service des horaires later during the semester and posted on TimeEdit.the answer to each question will be graded on 6 or 7 points. The essays will draw on the course content and the compulsory readings. One of the 3 questions can deal specifically with the compulsory readings. 
The exam during the "seconde session" will have the same format as the exam of the first session: 3 questions, 3 hours, in class, no books/ sources allowed.
