The course provides an insight in a number of social and cultural issues related to tourism:
- Looking into definitions and concepts and analysing how culture is transformed for tourism consumption and how culture – on the other hand - shapes communities' and tourists' behaviours and consumption.
- Aiming at deconstructing and analysing the different stakeholders involved in tourism, the communities, the tourists, authorities and the tourism sector tackling the (power) relationships.
- Illustrating critically the relationship between culture and tourism by drawing on certain forms of cultural tourism, such as heritage and urban tourism.
- Another focus is on tourism (non)participation examining social tourism values, policies and practices.
Objectifs (et/ou acquis d'apprentissages spécifiques)
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the complex relationship between culture and tourism and develop his/her critical approach from a social perspective.
