Social and Cultural tourism issues

This course provides an overview of key issues related to the relationship between tourism, culture, and society. It critically examines definitions and concepts in the field and analyses, on the one hand, how culture is transformed and commodified for tourism consumption and, on the other hand, how culture shapes the behaviours, experiences, and consumption patterns of both hosts and tourists.

The course explores various forms of cultural tourism and addresses issues of tourism participation and social tourism. Drawing on a range of case studies, it critically illustrates the complex and reciprocal relationship between culture and tourism in different contexts.

1. Critically analyse and deconstruct the relationships between the various stakeholders involved in tourism, including local populations and communities, tourists, public authorities, and tourism sector actors, with particular attention to their interactions, interests, power dynamics, and the impacts of tourism on different groups.
2. Illustrating  the above by drawing on certain forms of cultural tourism, such as heritage and urban tourism.
3. Understanding tourism (non)participation examining social tourism values, policies and practices.

The course will be given approx 6 hours/week during November and December. All slides will be available on UV.
